OpenAI curbs propaganda with ChatGPT, Claude animates data, and Google launches Gemini Agent

October 9, 2026, marks three developments that outline the future of AI: who uses it for manipulation, how industry transforms data into something easily understood at a glance, and what happens when an assistant stops answering questions and starts completing tasks. OpenAI revealed that it blocked Russian and Iranian accounts using ChatGPT in influence operations. Anthropic introduced Claude Dashboards and Claude Motion to transform numbers into live dashboards and animations. And Google Cloud, at Gemini at Work, launched Gemini Agent, an enterprise agent with its own identity within Workspace.

OpenAI blocks Russian and Iranian influence campaigns on ChatGPT

OpenAI announced on Thursday, October 8, that it had banned accounts associated with Russian and Iranian influence operations. According to NPR, The Verge, and Euronews, the operators managed to spread false narratives in the media and, in one instance, provoke a reaction from a Polish MEP.

The Russian branch, focused on Latin America, sought to undermine support for Ukraine and influence local politics. OpenAI reports that they primarily used ChatGPT to draft internal reports for their superiors. One notable incident involved them impersonating an education official in Peru and persuading schools to organize activities about Ukraine featuring Stepan Bandera; the Peruvian newspaper Extra confirmed that at least one such event took place. A Polish report on this event led a far-right MEP to propose bans on Ukrainian entry, an example of how a falsehood can fuel historical tensions between Ukrainians and Poles.

Phantom think tank and nearly 100 fake articles

The same Russian operators claimed to run a fictitious think tank in Latin America, the Social Research Center, and recruit researchers without their knowledge of the project's true origins. OpenAI compares this to previous operations by the Internet Research Agency. In Iran, the pattern was different: seven fabricated bylines—including one of "Ervin Hoskins" that appeared in a local Florida newspaper, according to The Washington Post via The Verge—polished and placed nearly 100 articles in Persian and English about the US-Iran war and, to a lesser extent, US politics. Media outlets such as Daily Kos (community section) and Middle East Monitor (at least 21 pieces, according to NBC) published texts from these identities. OpenAI describes the Iranian operation as consistent with a "hired" commercial actor, without being able to identify the client.

The underlying message, summarizes researcher Darren Linvill (Clemson), is that AI is no longer just a shortcut: it helps to write in a tone that comes across as authentic to real media outlets. OpenAI says that campaigns focused on placing content in media outlets reached a larger audience than those using fake accounts on social media.

Anthropic launches Claude Dashboards and Motion: from spreadsheet to 30-second video

That same Friday, Anthropic updated Claude with two products designed for companies drowning in data. Claude Dashboards connects BigQuery, Databricks, Snowflake, and Salesforce (and later Looker, monday.com, and Tableau) and creates a dashboard that updates automatically. Every statistic, chart, or date on the dashboard can be viewed in natural language. When more in-depth analysis is needed, the dashboard can be sent to Amplitude, Grafana, Hex, Mixpanel, Omni, Perplexity, PostHog, or Sigma.

Claude Motion transforms a report or dataset into a 30-second explanatory animation. It doesn't use a video template: Claude writes code (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) that animates text, charts, shapes, and images. You can adjust the animation in an editor or by requesting changes from Claude, and download it as an MP4 file. You can also export it to Adobe, Descript, HeyGen, Higgsfield, InVideo, Luma AI, or Runway (Canva and Captions coming soon).

Availability and Docs/Slides/Design out of beta

Dashboards is now in beta for paid plans; Motion, also in beta, is currently only available in Team and Enterprise. In the same announcement, Anthropic released Docs, Slides, and Design from beta: since their launch in September, more than 45 million documents, presentations, and designs have been created, and they are now available even on the free plan. They can be exported to PowerPoint and PDF, and editable presentations can be sent to Google Slides. Claude Design will leave its independent website on December 14th and move to Artifacts.

Google Cloud introduces Gemini Agent: objectives, not just instructions

At Gemini at Work 2026 (October 8), Google Cloud unveiled Gemini Agent, the "universal agent for work." The idea, in the words of Thomas Kurian, is to provide objectives , not just instructions: the agent plans, loads skills and tools, connects to the company's systems, and delivers a finished product. Sundar Pichai provided context: Gemini has over 1 billion monthly active users, and nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies already use Gemini Enterprise.

The agent integrates with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Git, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres, Snowflake, and any MCP server. It has its own identity in Workspace—email, context, and an audit trail attributed to the agent, not a person—which facilitates compliance in finance, legal, or healthcare. By default, it chooses the best model for the task; the user can force the selection, and from day one, the list includes Anthropic's Claude models, with plans to expand to open source and proprietary models. There are real-time spend controls and multi-model routing.

Where it runs and who tests it

It's available on iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, command line, Workspace, Microsoft 365, ServiceNow, and Slack. Early testers cited by Google include On, Shopify, and PayPal; named Enterprise customers range from BNP Paribas and Bradesco to Merck and Ulta Beauty. It's currently in private preview; the expansion to Workspace Business and Enterprise plans is coming "soon," with no specific date from Google Analytics, and Google says it will be included at no extra charge wherever Gemini Enterprise is already available. The consumer version will arrive later.

What connects these three fronts?

Same week, three sides of the same coin: AI as a weapon of influence that must be detected and neutralized, AI as a data translator for busy humans, and AI as a coworker with its own email address. Those who publish, those who measure, and those who delegate tasks will have to accept that the assistant no longer just speaks: it acts, and leaves a trace.
